Ben Swimming

Ben made a HUGE break through in his swimming lesson yesterday … he finally put his face in the water without screaming, crying, or whining!!!  I was so proud of him and he was quite proud of himself.  Sam and Ben have been taking swimming lessons for the last six months.  Sam is just working on learning all the different strokes and getting better at the ones he knows.  Ben has just been scared of the water for a while now.  At first it was a big leap for him to even want to get in the water.  He's been getting in with a floaty during Sam's lesson and just splashing around, but he's never actually wanted to have his lesson before.  Getting him to take the floaty off is a little fight every week.  Last week I brought his super hero dive toys and he played with those for a while but there was no big change.  Yesterday I took his little net with the little fish that you dive for and he was totally into it.  At first he stayed in the shallow area so he didn't have to put his face in the water, but he wandered into deeper water and panicked when he couldn't get them.  I encouraged him to put on his goggles and try to find them.  It worked!!!  He dove for those fish for an hour.  His instructor even managed to get him to do a little swimming on his own.  Amazing!

Sam's First Soccer Game

Sam's first soccer game was yesterday. He is #7 in red (Leopards). His buddy Jack is #8. They played the wrong team for the first quarter (yellow) until the coaches sorted it all out. Sam said he loved hearing us cheer for him.  So glad they got to play in the 80 degree weather yesterday instead of the 20 degrees with sleet we had today! Sam and Jack did awesome and had so much fun!

Racing BristleBots

Sam's school had a science fair this year for K-6.  Sam picked Racing BristleBots as his project.  Building robots sounded like a lot of fun.  I enjoyed working on it just as much as he did.  He was so excited about it that he took it for show and tell a few weeks before it was due.  The only painful part was helping Sam type the paper.  I couldn't actually type it or format it for him, so I just sat next to him over the course of a few days (totalingabout 4 to 5 hours) and told him what to click to add a title page, table of contents, headings, images, etc.  Of course Sam doesn't know how to type, he's only 7 and in the second grade so it didn't seem like a skill he needed yet.  I'm thinking a fun typing program  will be in our near future.  The display board was easy to build since he had typed the paper instead of writing it out by hand.  He's already ready for his next science project!

Little Rookies Part Two

This week went much better.  At least Ben didn't cry!  We put Ben in figure skates instead of hockey skates and went to open skate before Little Rookies to warm up.  Ben is still not loving it, but he's tolerating it.  I think all the equipment is just a bit too much for them.  They'd rather just do the open skate and have fun with their friends.

Green Belt

Sam is still going to karate twice a week and took his green belt test today.  He loves grappling but doesn't much care for sparring because he doesn't like wearing all the pads.  He smiles so much during class that you can't wipe the grin off his face.  It's all just one big, fun game to him!

Little Rookies

Hockey equipment fitting for Little Rookies.  It's a free four week intro to hockey.

The equipment was HUGE.  I ended up putting Ben in all of Sam's old gear and Sam wore most of the stuff they had sized for Ben.

They were sooo excited!

Big mistake!  I put Ben in hockey skates.  He couldn't stay up on them. And after falling a few times he started doing what I called spaghetti legs.  The coaches would try to stand him up and he just wouldn't even try to stand up.  Awesome.

Sam had fun and did a great job in the "advanced" group.

Mustache Day

The day that almost wasn't!  The boys stayed home sick the day before mustache day and they were so glad they were going to be able to go to school the next day.  They didn't want to miss it!  And then I completely forgot about it the next morning and sent them off to school without mustaches.

I suddenly remembered about an hour after I had taken them to school so I rushed back.  Poor Benny had thrown a fit when he realized what day it was and didn't have his mustache.  He didn't want anyone else's mustache either!  He wanted his super special green one.  He agreed to wear a borrowed black one on his shirt "until his mom came with his green one."  So so glad I remembered.

Pirate Weekend

Pirate Weekend at Sea Life Aquarium in Grapevine.

They had these treasure chests hidden in tanks around the aquarium.  The kids went on a scavenger hunt to find all of the letters.  Then they had to unscramble them to collect the booty … a bag of gold coins!  Had lunch at Rainforest Cafe afterwards.  So. Much. Fun.

100th Day of School

The boys dressed like they were 100 years old today to celebrate the 100th day of school.  They had a lot of fun and games at school to celebrate being 100 days smarter!
